Installing an EV Charger at Home: What High Desert Homeowners Should Know
If you drive an electric car in the High Desert, charging at home beats hunting for a public plug, especially with the long drives down the hill into the rest of Southern California. As of 2026, a Level 2 home charger install in Adelanto and the wider High Desert usually runs about $800 to $2,500, not counting the charger itself, and Rufino Electric gives you that price in writing before we start. What you pay depends mostly on how far your parking spot sits from the panel and whether your panel has room. Here is what to know.
Level 1 is too slow for most drivers
The charger that comes in the box plugs into a normal 120-volt outlet. That is Level 1, and it only adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range an hour. If you commute across Southern California, you could plug in overnight and still wake up short.
A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind your dryer uses, and adds about 25 to 30 miles of range an hour. That fills most cars overnight. It is what nearly every EV owner out here ends up installing.
What we do on the install
We run the whole job with one licensed electrician and our documented process, so it is done the same right way every time:
We check your panel. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt, 40 to 50 amp circuit. Many 200-amp panels have room for it. If yours is an older 100-amp panel or already full, we tell you straight whether it needs a panel upgrade first, before you spend a dime on the charger. Our guide to what a panel upgrade costs covers that side.
We run a dedicated circuit. We bring a new circuit from your panel to where you park, in the garage, the carport, or an exterior wall. The distance and the route are the biggest factors in the price.
We mount the charger. We hang the unit where the cord reaches your charge port with room to spare. Out here we make sure any outdoor mount is rated to take the High Desert sun, heat, and dust.
We pull the permit. A new 240-volt circuit needs a permit and a final inspection. We handle both, so the work is on the record and to code.
Trimming what you spend to charge
Ask Southern California Edison about a time-of-use rate. Many plans charge less late at night, which is exactly when your car would be charging. A smart charger can schedule itself to run only during those cheaper hours. There are also federal tax credits for EV charging equipment worth checking before you buy. We do not sell chargers or file your taxes, but we will size the circuit right for whatever unit and rate plan you choose.
A couple of common questions
Can I just use my dryer outlet? You can with an adapter, but we do not recommend it. Most dryer circuits are 30 amps, a Level 2 charger wants 40 to 50 for full speed, and you should not share the circuit with an appliance. A dedicated circuit is the right way.
Thinking about solar too? If solar and a battery are on your list, tell us now. Both tie into the same panel, so sizing it once for the charger and the solar saves you a second permit and a second day without power.
