Summer Electrical Safety Tips for High Desert Homeowners

Summer in the High Desert is not like summer anywhere else. Temperatures push past 110 degrees for days at a time. Your AC runs nonstop. Every fan, every window unit, every appliance is pulling power. That puts enormous stress on your home's electrical system. If the system is old, undersized, or has problems you have not noticed yet, summer is when those problems show up. Here is how to keep your home safe.

Your AC Is the Biggest Load

In Adelanto, Victorville, and Apple Valley, air conditioning is not a luxury. It is survival. A central AC unit draws 15 to 60 amps depending on its size and age. When temps hit triple digits around mid-June and stay there through September, that unit runs almost continuously.

If your electrical panel is older (60 or 100 amps, common in homes built before the 1990s along Bear Valley Road and in the older parts of Adelanto), the AC may be pulling more power than your panel can safely deliver. Signs of panel overload include breakers that trip repeatedly, warm or hot breaker box covers, and lights that dim when the AC kicks on.

A panel upgrade to 200 amps gives your home the capacity to handle modern electrical loads safely. It is not just about convenience. An overloaded panel is a fire hazard.

Extension Cords Are Not Permanent Solutions

When it gets hot, people plug in extra fans, portable AC units, and evaporative coolers. They run extension cords across rooms and through doorways. This is one of the most common causes of electrical fires in residential homes.

Extension cords are for temporary use. They are not designed to handle heavy loads for hours or days at a time. A portable AC unit drawing 12 amps through a 16-gauge extension cord will overheat the cord. The insulation melts. The wire sparks. That is how house fires start.

If you need power in a room that does not have enough outlets, have an electrician add dedicated circuits and receptacles. It is a small job that prevents a big disaster.

Watch Your Outdoor Outlets

Summer in the High Desert means dust storms, monsoon rains in late July and August, and dry lightning. All of these can affect outdoor electrical outlets. Make sure every outdoor outlet has a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) and a weatherproof cover.

GFCI outlets have the "test" and "reset" buttons on the face. They cut the power instantly if they detect a ground fault, which prevents electrocution. If your outdoor outlets do not have GFCI protection, that is a code violation and a real safety risk, especially if you use a pool, a swamp cooler, or power tools outside.

Press the "test" button on each GFCI once a month to make sure it trips properly. If it does not trip when you press the button, replace it immediately.

Pool and Spa Electrical Safety

Many High Desert homes have pools or above-ground spas. Pool pumps, heaters, and lights all need proper electrical connections. The National Electrical Code requires specific bonding and grounding around pool equipment. If your pool pump has a damaged cord, a loose connection, or missing bonding wire, it can electrify the water.

Never use a regular household extension cord to power a pool pump. Pool equipment should be on its own dedicated circuit with GFCI protection. If you are adding a pool or spa, or if your existing setup looks questionable, have it inspected by a licensed electrician.

Surge Protection

Summer lightning storms roll through the Victor Valley every monsoon season. A single lightning strike near your home can send a voltage spike through the wiring and fry electronics, appliances, and your HVAC control board. A whole-home surge protector installed at the electrical panel catches these spikes before they reach your devices.

Power strips with surge protection help, but they only protect what is plugged into them. A panel-mounted surge protector covers everything in the house, including hardwired systems like your AC and water heater.

Signs of Electrical Trouble

Call an electrician right away if you notice:

  • A burning smell near outlets, switches, or the panel
  • Outlets or switch plates that feel warm or hot
  • Buzzing or crackling sounds from the panel or walls
  • Scorch marks or discoloration on outlets
  • Breakers that trip and immediately trip again after being reset
  • Flickering lights throughout the house (not just one fixture)

These are not minor annoyances. They are warning signs of wiring problems that could start a fire. We handle electrical repairs and troubleshooting calls across the High Desert and can usually diagnose the problem the same day.

Prepare Before the Heat Hits

The best time to deal with electrical problems is before summer peak. Schedule an inspection in late spring or early summer. We check your panel capacity, test your circuits, inspect your wiring, and flag anything that needs attention. This gives you time to make fixes before your system is under maximum stress.

If your home needs lighting upgrades or rewiring, doing it before the 110-degree days arrive makes the project easier for everyone.
